Conflagulations old friend...

I've been working on more models for my Inq28 project. This one has been done for a while but its just taken me ages to actually get around to photographing it...

This was an idea I originally had back in the day to make an Arco-Flagellant, combining a Warhammer Empire Flagellant head with a Vampire Counts Ghoul body. This idea has taken so long to reach gestation that those models have subsequently become Age of Sigmar Flagellants and Ghouls, and GW has even produced an actual plastic Arco-Flagellant kit (which did provide weapons for this model, I never actually decide on a source for these in my original concept).

The nature of the shoulder attachments of ghoul body (actually a 'Cryptguard', whatever that is...) meant that I needed to use the original arms and merge them with the Arco-Flagellant weapons which worked out quite well, I was even able to turn a tooth pushed through the skin of the upper arm into a attachment point for one of the cables.

I tried to make the areas where the flesh meets the tech look inflamed although it doesn't show up well in these photos.

This model also marks my first foray into Contrast paints on the hair.

This guy is currently designated Enoch-452, and will be part of Tamerlane Voth's Puritanical warband.

I've also painted up a couple of old Bretonnian archers. These another freebee that came with an old issue of White Dwarf (presumably during the release of the revamped Bretonnian army for Warhammer 5th edition).

These were originally painted years ago and this is just a touch up, although I did remove most of the mold lines my younger self was too impatient to deal with.

This was just a simple quick paint job to give some possible background minis for scenarios. I even went with Goblin Green bases (although not true Goblin Green, just a the Vallejo paint of the same name).

I have several other Inq28 models built but not yet painted as I'm currently working on a bunch of original Necromunda Escher.

Till next time...

A Long Unexpected Inquisition...

Something a little different this time, and something not quite so-Old Hammer.

This is a project that I began several years ago but abandoned incomplete. I can't say exactly what caused me to go back and finish it (and dive off down this particular rabbit hole...).

To go back to the very beginning, when the Inquisitor game first came out, I came up with a background idea for a pair of rival Inquisitors, Ankyra and Tamerlane Voth. The basic premise was that Inquisitor Rastaban Tycho (whose name I subsequently borrowed for one of my RT Inquisitors) discovers a twin brother and sister who are unusually both psykers, and both strong enough to not be Astropathed or make a one-way pilgrimage to the Golden Throne.

Tycho took the two into his retinue and eventually both became Interrogators and finally Inquisitors themselves. However, their mentor had always been on the radical side of the coin and finally took a dive off the deep end and was declared a heretic by his peers. The Voths were not directly involved in these events and avoided censure themselves.

However their reactions to these events were dramatically different. Ankyra, always secretive in her actions became even more so. Tamerlane comes to see their mentor's downfall as being inevitable and swings to the Puritan side and becomes suspicious of his sister.

I never actually played Inquisitor and thus nothing every came of it at the time.

Later I started following the Inq28 community and made an attempt to build models for characters I had thought up, which is where this model came in. I didn't have much experience with converting metal models so I stuck to plastic parts.

I cannot claim any originality in this model, being based on a model made by Keravin (that I saw on the old Ammo Bunker forum), based on a Dark Eldar Warrior body with a hooded Wood Elf head.

So this is my homage to that model, Inquisitor Ankyra Voth.

I trimmed down the sharp and spikey bits, like the sides of the knee pads and spikes on the lower leg.

I used a bit of green stuff to fill a gap behind one arm and give her a bit of a neck, as well as covering the pattern on the knife scabbard (although that was ultimately obscured by the sword...).

The original came out long before the appearance of plastic Sisters of Battle so Keravin used a set of metal arms. I originally tried to use the Dark Eldar arms rearmed with Imperial weapons, however I was using a splinter rifle supporting arm and couldn't find anything suitable to put in the open hand. This was the main reason along with failure to find a sword that I liked that I lost interest originally.

After finishing this I went on a bit of spending spree gathering bits for Tamerlane Voth and members of their retinues, I've already built a gunslinger/veteran and an Arco-Flagellant, which will hopefully get painted soon.

Till next time...

Spaceballs! Oh s@*$ there goes the planet...

After a bit of a break from mini painting I have been working more on my famous sci-fi franchise inspired scenario idea.

I thought that Inquisitor Thrad needed some white armoured minions to complete his ensemble. I did consider using some Space Marines but I don't actually have many of those and had already used them in my other Inquisitor's (Tycho) retinue.

Instead I settled on some of the early Imperial Guard troopers with more armour than the normal bunch.

I painted the circular patch to match the orange shoulder pad rank insignia used by the Sandtroopers on Tattooine

I'm pretty happy with how the two of them have turned out, even if they are quite difficult to photograph! They do actually remind me more of the Spaceballs from Mel Brooks' parody (hence the title...) than actual Stormtroopers (probably something to do with the rounded helmets) but I don't think that's a major problem.

Finally a shot of them with their boss.

Till next time...

My First Space Marine

Been a while since I've posted anything here, or indeed done much painting on the Oldhammer front, however this weekend I finally pulled my finger out and finished a couple of minis that have been sitting part painted for some time (can't quite recall for how long...). They are both from the original C100 range of space marines.

These are the muscle for Inquisitor Tycho's retinue who accompany the Inquisitor to smite the heretics once his more covert operatives have established the perpetrator's guilt.

They are both painted in a similar fashion to Tycho, with a Codex Grey basecoat, shaded with Delvan Mud and highlighted with Fortress Grey.

First up with have Brother Ramius who likes hitting people with his chainsword.

Poor quality photo but does show the red T-emblem that is Tycho's personal insignia

Then we have Brother Honourius who prefers to sit back and blasts heretics with his missile launcher.

I've used Tycho's personal emblem on both marine's shoulder pads

And finally a shot of the two with the Inquisitor himself.

Till next time...

Round Up 2015

Happy new year to all you Oldhammerer's out there, I hope everyone had a enjoyable festive season.

So as a follow up to my similar post in 2014 I thought I have a look back at what I have achieved in the last year.

This year I've managed to paint 25 models and greatly increased the cast of my Euphoria setting.

Captain Smryk's crew has grown considerably with six additional members including a first mate, a medic, a pilot and some cannon fodder.

First Mate "Ace" Ryker
Chief of Security Sphinx and Helmsman Pyke
Ensign Rizzo, Doc 'Bones' and Crewman Raybone

Inquisitor Tycho and his retinue have made their appearance.

Ankyra Voth, Inquisitor Tycho, and Gerhard Cornwallis
A sneaky assassin

Regis Evangeline Margeritte d'Sarck, Governor of Euphoria and her entourage has also taken to the stage.

Milady d'Wysper, Regis d'Sarck, Tighert Ankhe and Father Toil

The Euphorian Arbites Precinct has been reinforced.

Judge Diens
Arbitrator Locke

The insidious Cult of the Incandescent Astral Wyrm has continue to gain new adherents.

William Dymm, Vardys Jax, the Emissary, Sister Lorritta, Jakob Dymm

And the Eldar have also gained a few reinforcements.

Including a Scout...
...several extra Fire Dragons...
...and a Death Jester.

Additionally I have painted one extra who isn't connected with Euphoria.

Hugh Ponsonby Wilberforce...

So lets have a look back at my three targets from last year and see what I will set myself for the coming year:

1 - Paint at least 17 models. I've definitely managed this one, having painted 8 more models than my target. Onwards and upwards on this one.

2 - Base all my models. Yeah... so this one I've basically failed at, managing to base only one model...

3 - Manage at least one post a month. This one I did quite well at until June when I didn't post at all. Again during August and September I didn't post, these were mostly due to external factors.

So for 2016 I think I will continue on the same lines with my targets, as real life and other hobbies certainly eat into my time with regularity. Therefore my targets will be:

1 - Paint at least 26 models. Again I'm going to try and at least match my previous years efforts painting wise. I plan to attempt some batch painting of groups of similar models in the coming year which should help with this one.

2 - Base all my models. Going to try again on this one, need to get down to a concerted basing session.

3 - Manage at least one post a month. Based on the last year trying anything more is likely to be difficult.

Inspired by Asslessman and Axiom of Magpie and Old Lead's Rogue Quest I also have an idea for getting in some gaming next year too (at least of the solo variety). Not going into to much detail now but it involves the fact that I have a copy of the old Ultramarines game box complete with its space hulk floor plans...

Till next time.

Silent Death...

Finished off the Assassin today, haven't decided on a name for him yet but he's definitely going to work for Inquisitor Tycho.

Further photo experimentation this time trying out a non-white background. I'm quite pleased with how he's come out and happy I didn't go with black.
Not sure my attempt to replicate the bone effect I did on the Death Jester on the skulls worked out as quite as well but I'm think it's ok.

Return of the Shady Space Ninjas...

Painted his sword in a scabbard since it seemed more sensible that way.
Just deciding on what to paint next although with the big IMPS Nationals show coming up in November my historical modelling projects are probably going to take over priority. On that note I have considered showing some of my historical stuff here but as its not Oldhammer or even wargaming related I haven't done so.
However I may start another blog for that stuff, dunno if they're of any interest to most Oldhammers but I'll put up a link when or if I ever got round to it.

Till next time.

Onwards minions...

Belated greetings fellow Oldhammerers

It's been a while due to a mixture of travelling for work and indecision over what to do next. But I've painted up a couple of new minis over this last weekend. Although the crummy weather of late means these aren't the best photos but I'll see if I can get some better ones in the future.

Both of these are going to be part of Inquisitor Tycho's retinue, forming the less conspicuous element who go in first.

Really stary eyes... doesn't look as bad in person.

First is Ankyra Voth, who is a Reaper Chronoscope mini and thus the first non-citadel figure to make it into the project. She is one half of the Voth twins both of whom serve Tycho in various capacities. Her brother Tamerlane will be turning up at some point.

The Voths started out as a pair of Inquisitor characters I was working on some years ago, Tycho was originally a background character in their origin story.

Joining Voth is Adar Cornwallis who I haven't fully fleshed out the background for yet. He is more recent addition mostly just because I came across the Cornelius model going pretty cheap on ebay...

I decided to go for a fairly sedate colour scheme for him, he is supposed to be a incognito, agent type after all.

And here's the two of them with their boss.

Hopefully It won't be as long a wait for the next update.

Till next time.

Nobody Expects... Inquisitor Tycho...

So having got the obvious joke out of the way...

I present for your delectation Inquisitor Rastaban Tycho, archnemesis of Captain Smyrk.

Tried to get a sort of mitre effect with his hat...

I only noticed whilst I was painting him that he has a large T on one of shoulder pads. Strangely appropriate given his name...

Still trying to work out the crazy jagged edged sword...

Took me ages to track down some loose RT space marine backpacks for a remotely sensible price on Evilbay. At least now I have small stash for various powered armour models I have.

Tycho faces off with his nemesis Cap'n Smyrk...

That means that both of the main Protagonists from my Euphoria settings have now been painted. Admittedly Smyrk's crew is currently rather more numerous than Tycho's retinue...

Till next time
